It has often been said, ‘Don’t discuss religion or politics with those who don’t believe what you believe, unless you’re looking for an argument.’ If you have a conversation with someone from a different Christian denomination than yours, and you use scripture to uphold your beliefs, they may have a different understanding of the Bible than you do. Most Christians claim that the Bible is the unfailing word of God and that it will not contradict itself, yet there is a wide variety of doctrines and beliefs based on the Bible. The reason for this is that all denominations have differing interpretations of God’s word. To avoid arguments, many will claim the moral high ground by saying ‘Well, we will just have to agree to disagree.’ I have never found this approach intellectually satisfying, as it may leave me ignorant of a Godly insight. I do not want my beliefs about God to be inaccurate. I want my doctrines, beliefs, and actions to be as accurate as possible. If this is what your heart desires as well, then this might be a good Bible study for you. It will explore how to skillfully let the Bible speak, interpret, define, and explain itself. It will not tell you what to believe, as the Bible will do that. It will not follow the doctrines or beliefs of any one particular denomination. It will challenge many common beliefs, but leave it up to the reader to decide for themselves if the Bible supports their beliefs.

Using scripture in context, the biblical definition of words, and God’s original inspired understanding, the Bible will explain itself to those who let it. When the Bible does make changes to its traditions and doctrines, it does so within its pages. The Bereans were in a conundrum when they heard Paul’s message. To verify Paul’s claims, they searched the scriptures day and night. You will never be sure about your beliefs until you have to prove them to yourself. Christians should be able to give an answer for the hope that is in them and support their beliefs through irrefutable scripture.

  1. Can you scripturally support your beliefs to those who ask?
  2. Are you aware of any scriptures that may contradict your beliefs?
  3. Can you reconcile scriptures that might contradict your beliefs, or do you just avoid them?

1 Peter 3:14-15 GOD’S WORD Translation

14 But even if you suffer for doing what God approves, you are blessed. Don’t be afraid of those who want to harm you. Don’t get upset. 15 But dedicate your lives to Christ as Lord. Always be ready to defend your confidence ⌞in God⌟ when anyone asks you to explain it. However, make your defense with gentleness and respect.

Philippians 2:12-13 International Standard Version

12 And so, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only when I was with you but even more now that I am absent, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God who is producing in you both the desire and the ability to do what pleases him.
