Lesson 17

Outed as God’s son at his baptism, Jesus was then tested by Satan. After passing his tests, Jesus began his earthly ministry where John left off. He preached repentance for the Kingdom of God was at hand. While gathering his followers Jesus performed many miracles, and the people flocked to him where he would repeat his message of repentance and the Kingdom of God. The primary message Jesus preached to everyone was the fulfillment of John’s good news of the coming Kingdom of God. Jesus was the embodiment and beginning of that message. He urged people, as John did, to turn from their sins and live lives pleasing to God. Jesus knew the best chance people would have at eventually accepting him, in his day and ours, was if they lived a Godly life of honesty and love towards others. The sermon on the mount containing the golden rule of loving others as yourself is most often quoted as direction on how to live a good life. In it Jesus directs both the crowds and his disciples on the basic life skills that will please God and lead to eternal life.

So they brought to him all those who were afflicted, those suffering from various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics. And he healed them.

Matthew 5:5-10 Easy-to-Read Version
5 When Jesus saw the crowds of people there, he went up on a hill and sat down. His followers came and sat next to him. 2 Then Jesus began teaching the people. He said, 3 “Great blessings belong to those who know they are spiritually in need. God’s kingdom belongs to them. 4 Great blessings belong to those who are sad now. God will comfort them. 5 Great blessings belong to those who are humble. They will be given the land God promised. 6 Great blessings belong to those who want to do right more than anything else. God will fully satisfy them. 7 Great blessings belong to those who show mercy to others. Mercy will be given to them. 8 Great blessings belong to those whose thoughts are pure. They will be with God. Great blessings belong to those who work to bring peace. God will call them his sons and daughters. 10 Great blessings belong to those who suffer persecution for doing what is right. God’s kingdom belongs to them.
