Lesson 13

Jesus knew God’s word was truth and gave life. He prayed that his followers would follow the truth of God contained in the word. The Bereans were counted as noble for searching the scriptures daily to prove the truth so they could faithfully follow. Today, Christians have an abundance of versions of the Bible to read to help them discern the truth of God. When scriptures supporting our beliefs conflict with other scriptures, then there is an error in what we believe, or how we are understanding scripture. Like the Bereans, we need to study to prove what is true from the word of God.

Matthew 4:4 Evangelical Heritage Version
4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.”

John 17:14…17 New Life Version
14 “I have given Your Word to My followers. The world hated them because they do not belong to the world, even as I do not belong to the world… 17 Make them holy for Yourself by the truth. Your Word is truth.

Romans 12:2 King James Version
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Titus 1:2 Easy-to-Read Version
2 This faith and knowledge make us sure that we have eternal life. God promised that life to us before time began—and God does not lie.
Martha had faith and knew when her brother Lazarus would be resurrected and live again after he had died. She knew when Jesus would raise his followers, do you? How do these scriptures complement those that support your beliefs?

John 11:21-24 International Children’s Bible
21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you anything you ask.” 23 Jesus said, “Your brother will rise and live again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know that he will rise and live again in the resurrection on the last day.”

John 6:39-40 New Living Translation
39 And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. 40 For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”
44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
54 But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.
